Every 1st and 3rd Monday Morning through September 2026 the Pima County Health Department Community Health and Wellness team will be visiting the Sam Lena-South Tucson library to support community members with resource navigation and heat relief services. Our Bookmobile goes out on monthly visits to the outlying areas of Pima County, and has since the 1960s. The bookmobile carries over 2,500 items, and people borrow around 17,000 items each year from the Bookmobile. It travels an average of 8,500 miles a year! Writer in Residence Courtney Gustafson will be available for eight 30-minute one-on-one sessions per week, from September 1 to November 10, 2026, at the Martha Cooper Library. Tuesday afternoons, 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Friday mornings, 10:30am to 12:30pm. Courtney Gustafson is an author, community organizer, and cat rescuer who lives and works in Tucson, Arizona. A former academic, Courtney especially values writing communities that are accessible outside of academia, and has led writing workshops in prisons, refugee communities, and women’s shelters. Outside of writing, she organizes community-based animal welfare and mutual aid projects. Courtney can help you generate new ideas, edit existing writing, work through writer’s block, explore questions about publishing, and more. Registration opens one week before each consultation. Participants will create clear or opaque slime and personalize it with glitter, colors, and fun trinkets to make it uniquely their own. Recipes and techniques are simple to recreate at home, and everyone will take their slime creations home in provided containers. Teens and tweens are welcome to join us for plant-based tattoos at the library! Look through many design options and pick out the perfect one for you, placed where you'd like. Plant Based Tattoos are non-toxic, food-based dye that is more convenient and versatile than Henna. The amazing tattoos last between 3 to 7 days varying from person to person’s activity level. These tattoos are safe, fun and look like the real thing! And if necessary, they can come off immediately with rubbing alcohol. This is a fun guest presentation by Vanya Marinkovic. Registration is not required.
This one-on-one session includes access to our creative tools: the 3D printer and Cricut cutting machine. There will be a basic guided education for these machines and their accompanying software. For ages 14 and up only and computer experience/knowledge is required. Registration begins 2 weeks prior to the event.
Read to a Dog is designed to allow young learners the chance to read to a non-judgmental listener, one who will accept the story exactly as it's read. For many children this allows them a rare chance to experience stress-free reading: they are able to relax and have fun while sharing a book.
