American Girl of the Month Club (ages 6-12) Join us once a month to celebrate the diverse culture of the United States! Each program will feature one of American Girl s historical dolls and include fun activities that are inspired by her stories. Wednesday, September 23 (1 & 4 pm) - The September program will spotlight a Native American girl from 1764 named Kaya, who is a member of the Nimiipuu, or Nez Perce tribe of present-day Idaho. Kaya s story reflects her love for the natural world and her family. She hopes to become a strong and courageous leader for her people. Wednesday, October 21 (1 & 4 pm) - October's program spotlights Felicity Merriman, a daring and spunky girl who is growing up in Colonial America during the early American Revolutionary War period. Felicity loves horses and prefers to be outdoors instead of doing what she describes as quiet, sitting down kinds of things . Wednesday, November 18 (1 & 4 pm) - November's program centers around Caroline Abbott, who lives on Lake Ontario in upper New York state and enjoys helping her family run a shipyard. Saturday with the Symphony: A Children s Program (3+yo) Third Saturday, each month (11-11:45 am) Children 3 and older can enjoy Saturday with the Symphony from 11-11:45 a.m. Saturday, at the Coeur d Alene Public Library. The free music education program is coordinated by the Coeur d Alene Symphony Orchestra and recurs the third Saturday of each month. The music-filled hour typically includes a fun musical performance, an interactive activity and a book reading by the children s librarian. Past musical performances have included traditional classical music, jazz, pop and world music. Come for a lively morning of musical enrichment! Sensory Storytime (Ages 3-8) - Wednesdays, September 30, October 28, and November 25 (10 am) REGISTRATION REQUIRED Join us for a monthly storytime that s designed for children with sensory and adaptive needs, and their caregivers. Welcoming to neurodivergence and disability, Sensory Storytime features a consistent visual schedule, announced transitions, low lighting, decreased distractions, and a small attendance capacity. We will enjoy stories, music, movement, play, and sensory activities that are typically at a preschool level. Noise-blocking headphones, weighted stuffed animals, and other sensory tools will also be available. Storytime will be followed by a variety of sensory activity stations. What to expect during this story time: Attendees do not need to sit during the program. Children can feel free to stand or move around during the program as long as they are safe for themselves and others. Children can participate with their voices in any way they like to, and enjoy other activities of their choosing while listening to our stories. IBOB is a program that brings booklovers together to compete in book-themed trivia competitions that focus on quality literature, comprehension, and teamwork. Sunday Matinee Contra Dance (All Ages) Sundays (2-4 pm) Join us for a free community Contra Dance, sponsored by the Spokane Folklore Society and featuring a local band. Contra dancing is a type of traditional folk dance from New England. Dancers face each other in contra lines and move up and down the formation as couples, in figures directed by a caller. The Virginia reel is a dance in this style. You don t have to be experienced the caller teaches all the moves! Special clothing is not necessary, and no partner is needed singles and couples are invited, and families are welcome. Saturday with the Symphony: A Children s Program (3+yo) Third Saturday, each month (11-11:45 am) Children 3 and older can enjoy Saturday with the Symphony from 11-11:45 a.m. Saturday, at the Coeur d Alene Public Library. The free music education program is coordinated by the Coeur d Alene Symphony Orchestra and recurs the third Saturday of each month. The music-filled hour typically includes a fun musical performance, an interactive activity and a book reading by the children s librarian. Past musical performances have included traditional classical music, jazz, pop and world music. Come for a lively morning of musical enrichment! Sensory Storytime (Ages 3-8) - Fourth Wednesday of the Month (10 am) REGISTRATION REQUIRED Join us for a monthly storytime that s designed for children with sensory and adaptive needs, and their caregivers. Welcoming to neurodivergence and disability, Sensory Storytime features a consistent visual schedule, announced transitions, low lighting, decreased distractions, and a small attendance capacity. We will enjoy stories, music, movement, play, and sensory activities that are typically at a preschool level. Noise-blocking headphones, weighted stuffed animals, and other sensory tools will also be available. Storytime will be followed by a variety of sensory activity stations. What to expect during this story time: Attendees do not need to sit during the program. Children can feel free to stand or move around during the program as long as they are safe for themselves and others. Kids Movie at the Library (Rated G) Tuesday, December 29 (10 am) Enjoy hot popcorn and a seasonal movie on the big screen in the Community Room. We will be viewing the 2007 major ocean picture, Surf's Up . This hilarious, animated mockumentary is about an Antarctic penguin who travels to a tropical island to pursue his dream of becoming a champion surfer. Rated PG and runs 85 minutes. Idaho Battle of the Books Book Club (Grades 4-6) 1st Saturday of the month November though February (1 pm) REGISTRATION REQUIRED It s like sports, but with books! Participate in a fun statewide reading experience by joining a team at the Coeur d Alene Library. IBOB is a program that brings booklovers together to compete in book-themed trivia competitions that focus on quality literature, comprehension, and teamwork. Registration is required, along with a commitment to join a 4-person team, read at least 4 of the 16 IBOB curated book titles, and attend 1pm book club meetings on the 1st Saturday of each month from November through February. Participants will be expected to attend our library s competition in March, with the possibility of moving on to district or regional competitions where they ll battle kids from other libraries and schools. This is a great option for homeschool students or kids who attend local schools that aren t participating in this program. Registration and the list of book titles are available online. Teen Zine Release (Ages 12-19) - Tuesday, December 1, January 5, February 2 Submissions open for next month. Want to be a content creator for a zine that s by teens and for teens? Start dreaming up content now. (Submissions are due before next month's release date.) Fancy yourself a good judge of books? Write book reviews. Are you a poet (and you don t know it)? Save your best poetry. Enjoy creating comic strips or small masterpieces? Digitize them and send them our way. Think you have great advice? Write an advice column. Have an important opinion that needs sharing? Send it in. Write short stories and one-act plays? Share them with us to be published. Made anything you think should be shared with the world? From Books to Bricks (Ages 6-12) - Tuesdays (4 pm) Bring your creative ideas and building skills to the library for this LEGO program! Each week, the library will share a favorite book that s chosen to inspire a LEGO building challenge, then participants will have the rest of the hour to create a masterpiece. One noteworthy creation will be chosen at the end of each program to feature in the library s glass display case for the community to admire throughout the week. Each month in the Children's Library, we ll bring Lauren Tarshis wildly popular I Survived series to life through activities and challenges inspired by the featured book. The Great Alaska Earthquake (Ages 6-12) - Wednesday, January 6 (1 & 4 pm) In January, journey to Alaska as we look at the aftermath of a 9.2 magnitude quake that struck in 1964. It shook for nearly five minutes, destroying downtown Anchorage and sending 30-foot tsunamis into coastal cities. Its vibrations were felt around the world! The Joplin Tornado (Ages 6-12) - Wednesday, February 3 (1 & 4 pm) In February, explore the science behind powerful tornadoes and the destruction they can cause, then test your hand at crafting a topsy-turvy twister of your own.
