José Garcia from Humanities Nebraska will discuss the relevance of Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, Día de los Muertos, Día de los Niños and other commemorations and how they have crossed over to American mainstream culture. Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with the Omaha Public Library! This year we’re celebrating the ways America has changed over the last 250 years through a year-long lecture series. Each month we’ll offer a different presentation from local experts on American history, culture, or experience. This is a free event for adults, teens and kids over the age of 10. In this workshop, Dr. Jay A. Irwin (they/them and he/him pronouns), Associate Professor of Sociology at University of Nebraska at Omaha, will present on the health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities. Topics include dynamics of identity and behavior, health disparities faced by LGBTQIA+ people including physical and mental health disparities, and ways and strategies to increase inclusion. Dr. Jay Irwin, whose research, publications, and public service involve the health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ communities. Their work has been published in the following peer-reviewed journals: Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health, Sexuality Research and Social Policy, Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, Gender Issues, Journal of Homosexuality, International Journal of Transgender Health (formerly International Journal of Transgenderism), Transgender Health, LGBT Health, among others.
