Altoona grew up around the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the Horseshoe Curve, still carrying trains around the mountainside west of town, is where every local child is taken to watch them pass. The Railroaders Memorial Museum downtown and Lakemont Park, home to Leap-the-Dips, the oldest roller coaster still running anywhere, are the other fixtures. Altoona Area Public Library serves the city from downtown.
